Meet the Artisans

Aloka’s handicrafts are sourced from artisan communities scattered throughout Myanmar. Far from being produced in a massive factory, the pieces we offer reflect the immense diversity of the different peoples found throughout the country.

When Myanmar experienced a “transition period” towards democracy in the late 2010s, which was following many years of military dictatorship, many craftspeople hoped their beautiful work could finally go beyond their borders. Indeed, new opportunities developed as tourism began to flourish, and trade picked up as well. But following the military coup launched of 2021, many skilled artisans suddenly found all possibilities of livelihood closed off, and began struggling simply to feed their families.

We at Aloka prioritize working with artisans from disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds, because we know just how hard it can be to survive at the margins of society in Myanmar. These include such groups as people with disabilities, mothers who have contracted HIV/AIDS, civil servants on CDM, ethnic and religious minorities, and more.

Aloka will continue highlighting the individuals and communities who have created your products with pride. Stay tuned for our updates!
